What kind of brush do you use to apply polyurethane?
Apply polyurethane using a bristle or foam brush about 2″ wide. Foam works well and eliminates the chore of cleaning, because the brushes are cheap and thus disposable. You can apply the first coat full strength or thinned up to half with paint thinner, making, in effect, a wiping varnish.

Why do you have to sand between coats of polyurethane?
MYTH #7: Scuff sand between coats to get a good bond. The purpose of this instruction is to create scratches in the surface so the next coat of finish can establish a "mechanical" bond. Polyurethane dries slowly, so there are always dust nibs that should be sanded out before the next coat is applied.

Do I have to apply a clear coat after staining? While staining creates a rich, deep color that highlights natural wood grain, it does not provide long-term protection. A polyurethane top coat protects the wood from scratches, stains and water damage.

How many coats of polyurethane should I apply?
There needs to be 3 coats of Polyurethane applied, especially if you are using an oil-based finish. The first coat should be mixed with mineral spirits. This acts as a sealer and provides a barrier between the wood and the oil finish you are using. A bristle brush is needed to apply the coats.

What is the best clear coat for wood?
The most common types are lacquer, shellac, polyurethane, varnish and wax. Generally applied with a brush. Varnishes are very durable but are slow to dry, making them susceptible to dust and dirt. Shellac is a fast-drying natural resin that may need to be thinned before applying.

Does polyurethane make wood waterproof?
The answer is no, polyurethane does not make wood waterproof even if you coat all sides and ends with multiple coats… at least not for very long. Wood expands and contracts and naturally contains moisture even when kiln dried. As it moves it eventually compromises the finish and allow wetness to invade.
