  • Because it's Server 2012. Backups are what you want to rely on. Also, when using virtualization, this is where snapshots come up in handy for those quick restores.

Agreed. Apply your virtualization platform to create snapshots.
For example with Hyper-v yous tin can use VSS to automatically create snapshots. Should you have an issue just boot one of those snapshots up.

  • Trouble with that is, this server is not virtual, it is concrete. That said, it withal would not address the issue had I applied an update to the Host and it died. I would have to restore from support. Granted, this problem would not be as probable on the host.

I agree... that is a problem.

Do yous take any backups for this host? If not and then can you remove the update you practical via safe fashion?

  • I don't currently accept an issue.

It'due south just that in the past I would ever create a restore point prior to updating drivers or running Windows Updates. If things went wrong, I but restored back to that restore point and I was back in concern.

  • Gotcha, to my noesis their are no "restore points" different in the client OS. Yous can utilise 3rd party tools or Windows Backup.

  • Just my opinion, Microsoft should re-consider adding this feature back. Sure, in that location are still options out in that location. Only this was the easiest, fastest way to get back upwards and running from a failed driver update or Windows update.

  • I'm not sure what the server team is planning. But if you virtualize y'all have that ability to take snapshots with hyper-v VSS and even replicate snapshots to other hosts using hyper-5 replica.

  • I am a small-scale i man shop, all I take is two domain controllers, a file/print server and a phone server. I do accept ane Host with one DC and the FIle/Print server running on it. The snapshots piece of work swell with it if it were an upshot, only again, what of the host and the 2 standalone servers?

  • One additional note, in small environments such equally mine, virtualization isn't always necessary or ideal.

I'm not certain why you say that. I have several clients that just take a single server (that includes me). I always virtualize. This mode I can easily have snapshots (as we take been discussing), migrations, and direction is all a snap.

  • Well, maybe I'm old school, but I don't like putting all my eggs in one basket. That one box dies, I am and our concern is 100% dead in the h2o. This is why I will not go that direction. I take a concrete and virtual domain controller, the virtual box can die, but everyone can proceed working, they may not be able to print or get to file shares, simply they can proceed to work. The phone arrangement is another ane. I merely do non want to take chances losing everything because I wanted to virtualize everything to a single box.

Sure, I can do ii boxes with failover, only that gets more costly.

Certain, I can do 2 boxes with failover, only that gets more costly.

I encounter what you are saying. Thats why I become a second server. Commonly I find its less expensive to buy 2 servers than to buy ane for each role. On the same notation, using what you already accept is unremarkably what information technology comes down to.

I thought his was such a good word that information technology deserved its own thread.
